Five Reasons to Visit Finland

Mar 05, 12 Five Reasons to Visit Finland

Finland is one of the countries you don’t hear about too often. With a population that hovers around five and a half million, more people live in Washington state than live in all of Finland. Finland has many gems that make it worth visiting, especially for avid travelers.

Influences of Russia, Scandinavia, and Europe can all be seen in Finland. Unlike the rest of Scandinavia, Finland uses the euro, which means traveling there does not require a currency change if you are already in Europe

1.) The Architecture – Being so close to Russia, Finnish architecture has a lot of Russian influence, which makes it unlike other European countries. Carl Ludvig Engel is behind a lot of the architecture in Helsinki and he had spent time in both Russia and Estonia before coming to Helsinki, so his style is unique to the rest of Europe.

2.) Helsinki – Finland’s population is fairly small and most people live around Helsinki. There are three major cities in Finland and they are all relatively close together. Helsinki is the center of them. Vantaa and Espoo both border Helsinki and it is not uncommon to go to all three cities in one day.

3.) Lapland – If you’ve ever wanted to go to the North Pole, Lapland is pretty close. It is the northernmost region of Finland. While it is not snowy here all year long, so if you want to get the full experience be sure to go during the winter.

4.) Stay in an Igloo – If you ever dreamed about being an Eskimo, you can travel to the north of Finland and stay in an igloo. Hotel Kakslauttanen [ http://www.kakslauttanen.fi/en/] offers tourists the chance to stay in an igloo amidst Kekkonen National Park. You are able to choose between a glass igloo, snow igloo, or a log cabin.

5.) Try Reindeer – Finland is one of the few countries where you will go to a restaurant and see reindeer on the menu. Just make sure you go to a traditional Finnish restaurant.

Know of another reason to visit Finland? Have you been to these places before? We’d love to hear what you think of them.

Cheers!
